Discovery 2 - Project Tempest

Discovery Series II Launch (Project Tempest)

The D2 had its public preview at Land Rovers North American HQ on the 30th April 98 which coincided with Land Rovers 50th anniversary.

On 1st June 98 two D2s (R997ERW and R342HAB) left London to travel to Paris for the vehicles premiere at the Paris Motor Show. Land Rover decided to go the scenic route covering 30,000 kM. The two Discoverys, one V8, and Td5 along with a 1-tonne Ifor Williams trailer travelled overland to India via Turkey, Iran and Pakistan. After being shipped to Australia they crossed the Gunbarrel Highway to Ayers Rock and then onto Sydney for another boat trip to New York. From there they travelled south to Costa Rica for their final overseas journey to Spain and then onto Paris via the Alps.

R997ERW (Top) Seen on Display at Gaydon Heritage Centre.

In early August 98 Land Rover held a technical briefing day at Gaydon for invited members of the worlds press.

In September 98 Land Rover held a ride and drive event near Nairn, Scotland again for invited members of the press.

S210KHP (2nd) a 1998 Discovery 2, registered in August 1998 and used on the press launch in Scotland. This vehicle was part of my own collection, but sadly written off several years ago.

S221KHP (3rd) a similar vehicle to my own D2, again used in the 1998 press launch.

The Discovery 2 officially launched at the Paris Motor Show on 29th September 98. This is the press advert (4th) which shows a Discovery 2 in Kinversand Gold, a new colour for the new Discovery 2.

On sale from 21st November 98 in the UK and in the New Year for elsewhere. Whilst the vehicle looks similar to the Discovery 1, the only part that both vehicles share is the tailgate.
